Just A Little Saturday Fun
Posted by The Sultan on December 20, 2008

The Sultan got to thinking of a little Saturday fun that we could have today. As he was watching the highlight reels of the entire year of college football, the little light bulb lit up above his noggin. Let’s count down the Top 10 College Football Uniforms. This is a lot easier said and done. Once The Sultan sat down to organize his list, it took him much longer than it should have. So many great colors and stripes! Too many decisions!
This is the best he could do (make sure to click the links for photos):
10. Clemson University. Maybe it’s because The Sultan has seen Clemson play his whole life, or maybe it’s because he likes the combination of Orange and Purple. Clemson deserves to be on this list because of the uniqueness that surrounds their attire. No other prominent school in the country mixes these two colors. Surprisingly, they look great together. It helps when the entire crowd of 90,000 is a virtual sea of orange.
9. University of Georgia. The Sultan is no fan of the Hairy Dawgs, but they do have some good looking outfits. They feature a very basic and simple design. The Georgia “G” is a great logo that is easily recognizable across the country. The Bulldogs feature a bright red that isn’t seen around the country in college football. We are used to the maroon/crimson-ish colors of teams like Alabama, USC, Oklahoma, etc. The solid red is refreshing. You have to love the black uniforms too. They looked solid last year, not so much this year.
8. Penn State University. You have to love the no frills look of JoePa’s players. There is no fancy piping and no overkill of logos. It’s a pure and classic uniform. Mix in the White Out and the navy uniforms and you get a rocking Saturday in Happy Valley.
7. University of Illinois. Ron Zook has brought a great look and change to the Illini football program. The best are their uniforms. The Sultan loves the combination of navy and orange. The home uniforms look great. So do the outfits for the road. The Sultan needs to show love to the team with the best name in college football: Juice Williams. Great uniform, even better QB name. The decal on the front of the helmet give many extra points to the Illini. If you look closely at this photo, you can see that the word “TEAM” graces the hats of the boys from Champagne.
6. The Ohio State University. The Buckeyes have the best band in the land, and some of the best looking duds as well. The thing that makes this uniform so great, is the way the stripes on the helmet, jersey, and pants are all the same. There is no change in color or design. That makes this uni stand out as one of the best. The addition of the buckeye leaves on the helmet makes it even better. Classic college football look.
5. Florida State University. We’ll stop the run through the Big Ten as The Sultan makes his way down to Tallahassee. The Seminoles clinch the 5th spot in the countdown thanks to the garnet and gold. Not only does Bobby Bowden’s squad have a solid color scheme, they have one of the best helmets in college football. The spear, the helmet stickers, the colors, awesome.
4. University of North Carolina. No, The Sultan is not crazy. He knows UNC is a basketball school. Watch out for Butch Davis, with his leadership and these sweet uniforms, the Heels could become a force on the gridiron as well. The mix of Carolina Blue and Navy looks so sharp. The addition of the navy blue jersey this season topped it off. Very simple and appealing to the eye. A+ from The Sultan.
3. University of California Los Angeles. Better known as UCLA, the Bruins feature the all-time classic uniform in the college game. The baby blue and gold mixture is pure perfection. Even the road uniform is sharp as a knife. The helmet features one of the best helmet decals in the game. If only the team was halfway decent nowadays.
2. Yale University. Don’t give The Sultan grief for this pick. Wait until you see this picture. Now you can understand why the Bulldogs come in at #2. Great color. Great logo. Great uniform. The stripes help makes this the 2nd best uni in the land. Check out the identical stripes on the helmet, pants, and socks! Yale has a great uniform to top off the long and storied tradition of the Ivy League school. More teams need socks like the Bulldogs, and they would make The Sultan’s top 10.
1. University of Texas. The eyes of Texas are upon you. The Sultan loves this uniform for many reasons. First, the Burnt Orange. There is no color like it used in college football. Second, the logo. The Longhorn is one of the greatest and most identifiable logo in sports. Third, the helmet. The Sultan loves white helmets. The mixture of the all-white helmet and the simple longhorn logo scores more points for Texas. Next, Bevo. You just have to love the Horns’ mascot. Finally, the word TEXAS written across the chest of every player. The Sultan loves this feature. It is much better than the wordmarks that need a microscope to read. Here’s another thing, when your cheerleaders have the best uniforms in football, your team has to have the same.
That’s The Sultan’s opinion. What’s yours?
Keep it in the shortgrass…
