Not Quite Finished

Posted by The Sultan on January 12, 2009

The Sultan is just happy that a home team finally one a game in the NFL Divisonal Round.  With The Sultan’s two correct picks yesterday, he was 3-1 this weekend.  He is still royally ticked at the Panthers performance, which cost him an undefeated round.

Way to go Philly.  After two playoff victories, who really cares that you were the last team to get into the field of 12?  Now the Eagles will travel to the Giant Toaster and be one step away from a Super Bowl appearance.  This is Philadelphia’s 5th trip to the NFC Championship game in the last 8 years.  Meanwhile, at the big ketchup bottle, the Steelers put on a display of classic Pittsburgh football with ball control and stifling defense.  Yes, San Diego scored 24 points but remember that they scored a late, cheap TD.  What won the game for Pittsburgh was the 3rd quarter.  The Steelers received the opening kickoff and proceeded to drive down the field and take a 21-10 lead.  Darren Sproles countered the Pittsburgh attack by unleashing a fabulous return deep into Steeler territory.  Next play from scrimmage, BAM!  Interception, and Big Ben’s offense was back on the field.  The Steelers controlled the ball for the rest of the quarter.  This made San Diego’s defense totally gassed and their offense shivering in the cold on the sideline.  That combination will not win playoff games.  The Terrible Towels now move on to face a familiar foe in the Baltimore Ravens.

We have an opportunity to have two No. 6 seeds face each other in the biggest game of the year.  Since The Sultan is no statistician, he is unsure if this has ever happened since the merger.  The Sultan does not want to ruin the suspense of his picks, so he will dedicate a later post towards that matter.

Finally, the real story The Sultan wanted to touch on today is the big news from Gainesville.  Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Tim Tebow will be returning for Gator Nation and his senior season.  This is great news for true sports fans and the entire arena of collegiate athletics.  The NCAA should begin a new promotional campaign with Tim Tebow in his Superman outfit.  This news is very enlightening to The Sultan.  It shows how down to Earth Tebow truly is.  He is more concerned for his love of the University of Florida, his teammates, coaches and the love of football than the millions of dollars floating around in the NFL.  Tebow will be able to play with the big boys soon enough, so why rush it?  He wanted to “finish what he had started,” and “have an undefeated season and give Florida a 4th National Title”.  This gives us all hope that the world is not completely filled with greed.

If you’re a Gator fan, you have probably been weeping with joy this afternoon.  Florida only had 3 seniors on their starting lineups this season.  Yes, they may lose Percy Harvin and several other underclassmen to the draft, but the backbone of the team is returning.  Also, Urban Meyer doesn’t recruit and rebuild; he reloads.  Along with the backbone comes the heart that is found in Tim Tebow.  You can’t function without a heart, and The Sultan predicts that Tebow’s squad will continue to have a strong pulse next year.  Don’t even begin to argue or predict, because we already have the 2009 pre-season No. 1 team.

This decision will only further cement Tebow as being possibly the greatest player of this generation.  By his return, Tebow is not guaranteed instant success and accolades.  He must continue to work his rear end off everyday, because there is always someone else out there looking to be king of the hill.  Whether or not Tebow wins a Heisman or a National Title again next year, he has impacted the game forever.  He possesses infinite intangibles on and off of the gridiron.  He has the utmost class and respect for everyone around him and the game of football.  Tebow is the type of football player that today’s children need to look up to and admire.  The more players like Tim Tebow within the game of football will solidify the game’s heritage for centuries to come.  The Sultan is glad that we all can experience his swan song at the college level because one day, we will all look back and say, “I remember when…”

Keep it in the shortgrass…

The Eagles deserve a lot of credit. The Sultan can’t wait to breakdown this weekend’s games. MY Steelers? HA! The Sultan likes many of the members of the Pittsburgh squad, but not quite sold on the team’s chances. We’ll have to wait and see!

  3. Oh, Sultan. We at the Handlery San Diego are sad about the Chargers’ loss. Our bar was full of Chargers fans (and a few Steelers fans too)…until about the 3rd quarter, where a few just gave up and went home. Boo. Maybe next year.

Hopefully so. The Sultan thinks that the Chargers are due for a trip to the Super Bowl. They have so many playmakers on both sides of the ball, that they are bound to break through eventually. Once the core of the team isn’t injured, we shall be in for a treat. Last year would have been the year if they wouldn’t have run into the buzz saw known as New England.

The Sultan really hopes that LT will finally be healthy next season. If so, the Chargers will make another postseason run and Tomlinson will inch closer towards being the best back of all time.
